Social Security benefits you receive are reported to you on a SSA-1099 that you will receive from the Social Security Administration in January.  You enter the benefits paid on a federal tax return.

However, if the Social Security benefits are the Only income to be reported on the tax return, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.
