Can we file form 5329 after filing my 2016 1040A?

We had a family emergency and death this Dec. and forget to take a MRD.  We took the distribution on Jan. 3, 2017.  Can we file the 5329 and ask for relief?

Yes.  The IRS will often accept this Form 5329 stand-alone, but every once in a while the IRS will reject it an request that it be submitted along with Form 1040X.
