Can I report only one of two identical 1099-R’s for one single Pension distribution? (Not enough space to get the complete question/info into this space).

Both Form 1099-Rs must be reported.  For the purposes of the part-year state tax returns, one reports Texas income and the other reports Kansas income.  When TurboTax ask if you (the recipient) made money in states other than Kansas, answer Yes.  TurboTax will allow you to prepare and file both state tax returns.

Why did you get 2 identical 1099-Rs?

I received a single Pension Distribution during the year of 2018 and during that same year I moved from Texas to Kansas.  I received two 1099-R's that are exactly the same except for boxes 13 and 14.  In the first 1099 box 13 shows TX and 0 dollars in 14 the second 1099-R shows KS in 13 and the Gross Distribution dollars amount in box 14.  Since Tx has no state income tax I intend to report only the KS 1099-R since that was my address of record as of 12/31/18.  Neither 1099-R was checked as "corrected" and there was no state or federal withholding.  Do you agree this is the best thing to do to avoid possible confusion and/or double reporting of the single distribution?

The state for which this is taxable income is your state of residence at the time of the distribution.  Unless the date of the distribution was 12/31/2018, your state of residence on 12/31/2018 is irrelevant.

Contact the payer for explanation.  I suspect that only one of these Forms 1099-R is correct and that the payer voided the other before ever sending it to the IRS.  That's not the best way to handle this unless they provide you with explicit instructions to destroy the original since it causes the confusion that you are experiencing.  Ideally they would just issue a corrected Form 1099-R, file both the original and the corrected forms with the IRS, and you would prepare your tax return using only the corrected form.

My statement that this was a single distribution may have been misleading.  The "single" distribution was paid to me monthly rather than in a single sum on a specific date.  What I could see happening is by reporting both 1099-R's it could easily be concluded incorrectly by Turbo Tax and the IRS that there were two separate distributions for the exact same amount or double the amount I actually received.

Does each Form 1099-R show a gross distribution of the total of all of the monthly distributions or does each one show half of the annual total?  While the payer might have shown half of the annual total (6 months) on separate Forms 1099-R and the entire amount on each reported as taxable in only one state, a Form 1099-R has two lines for boxes 12, 13 and 14, allowing each state's portion of the annual total to be reported on a single Form 1099-R.

If each Form 1099-R shows a a gross distribution of the entire annual amount, contact the payer for corrections.

Taken at face value, both Forms 1099-R need to be reported and the sum of the two will appear as income on your federal tax return.  It appears that you'll have to file part-year resident tax returns for both states.

Each of the two 1099-R's show exactly 1/2 of the total annual combined monthly distributions.  The two 1099-R IRS Forms "8H8034 3.000" have only one line for boxes 12, 13 and 14 so that must be the reason why the Recipient completed two forms.  The one that has Texas listed as the state shows "0" as the state distribution probably because there is no state income tax.  The one that has Kansas listed as the state reflects one half of the total annual combined monthly distributions probably based on the date I notified them of my change of address.  I don't know anything about filing part-year resident tax returns but hopefully Turbo Tax will point me in that direction.  I have so far been unsuccessful in reaching anyone at the Recipient's place of business.  Based on your input I feel pretty comfortable in reporting both 1099-R's and I was already prepared to file a Kansas return I just did not know it would be a part-year return.  You have been helpful and I appreciate your assistance.
