On a follow-up page after the main 1099-R form entry, usually you enter the NY state distribution amount to be the same as box 1 on the 1099-R form.
(I usually argue it is the box 2a amount ...if there is a real no-zero value there in 2a, but many disagree with me.....but usually box 1 and 2a are the same anyhow)
