Can I challenge the $3000 reduction on my tax refund? My estimated refund was $8381 but the IRS reduced it to $5,284 because an error in the SSN of a dependent.

My estimated refund was $8381 but the IRS reduced it to $5,284 because an "error in the SSN of a dependent was incomplete or missing. The last name of an individual claimed as a dependent does not match their records. One or more individuals claims as a qualifying dependent exceeds the age limit." I checked and all information regarding my 5-year old son is accurate.

Did you enter the wrong date of birth on your tax return?

If no error then you should first check with the Social Security Administration to be sure their records are correct.  The IRS matches SSN's with the SSA database.
