Adjustment necessary on Georgia State Tax return per a Turbo tax state review. The amount that has to be adjusted equals the taxable portion of our Social Security.

This came up after I began my state tax. I have not input any information manually into the return.

In TurboTax, all federally taxable IRA distributions, pensions, annuities, and Social Security are deleted from the state income tax return automatically if the taxpayer is a Georgia resident. See the Georgia website.

As you go through the Georgia interview in TurboTax, you should encounter a screen entitled "Here's the income that Georgia handles differently".

At the top of this screen, you will likely see "Retirement Income Exclusion Learn More".

The number to the right should be the sum of your IRA distributions, pensions, annuities, and Social Security that were taxable on the federal return and which was removed from Georgia taxable income. If it is not, go back to the federal return and make sure that each type of income was correctly entered.

My wife and I are full-time Georgia residents.  The program calculated that $33,774 of our joint Social Security (SS) payments were taxable on our federal return: $24,8933 for me and $8941 for my wife. However, on Turbo Tax Worksheet for Schedule 1 - Georgia return Retirement Income Exclusion), my SS is included in Line 8R but my wife's SS subject to federal taxes is not.  She only has a total of $4851 of other excludable income and we are each allowed to exclude $65,000.  The program will NOT allow me to manually override this apparent error.  What is the solution?

This is 4 years old hope I can still get an answer.   Same thing income Georgia handles different.   Came I chose Georgia for state then it came up and I put my IRA total.  Next screen had amounts in don't know from where on the pension & social security boxes.   I put all this in my Federal.  What do I do?

That's the taxable portion of your social security.  Approve it as an entry here and you can move on.
