1099-NEC for my daughter

My daughter is a college student. she got a 1099_NEC because of her work at the University. I am trying to enter her 1099-NEC, In the income summary section of the turbo tax home and business, I have the option "other common income" to enter a new 1099-NEC. However, when I press the button, I have two options either my wife or myself. I don't know how to add my daughter income.

I appreciate your help...

Best...

Yes, she would file her taxes and if you are claiming her as a dependent she would need to indicate that on her tax return.  Below are the qualifications for you to decide if you can claim her as a dependent.

Qualifying child:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Yes, you can do that with TurboTax Home and Business Desktop Version.

Yes, if you are using the desktop software (NOT TurboTax Online), you can Start a New Tax Return from the File menu.   You can prepare as many returns as you need to with the desktop software, and you can e-file 5 returns, so you should be able to prepare and e-file both of your separate returns.   Just make sure to name the files appropriately so you do not overwrite your tax file.

You do not enter a dependent's earned income from work on your tax return.  The dependent can file their own tax return and on their return indicate that they can be claimed as a dependent.

Your daughter's income does not go on your tax return.

She must file that income on her own tax return.  She is being paid as a nonemployee so it would be self employment income, based on the form she received.

For her tax return you should create a new account for her, then you can use the following link to enter her income on her tax return.  Be sure to select 'Claimed by someone else' on her return if you are claiming her.

so correct me if I am wrong. In the case of my daughter, she should filed her tax independently? I am the one who is doing the work. So I claim her as independent, however, she can still file the tax alone?

Let me know.

Thank you!

so on my turbo tax, I can start a new file for her, and send it separately. Can I do that on my turbo tax home and business. filing two separate taxes?
