Website won't allow me to save my expenses on my rental property

I'm under "wages and income" and clicked on "rental property". My 1099-misc saves, same for real estate taxes. Insurance premiums, repairs, utilities, supplies, management fees, professional and legal fees, and travel all say "not started" and show $0.00 for my 2020 tax return. When I click "start" it shows the amount I entered but does not show back up when I click "done" and still says $0.00 and "not started". I've tried getting a hold of tech support but they respond that this is a tax assistance question and that I need to give them more money. This is a problem with entering information on the website, not a tax assistance question.

This is normally caused by a browser issue.

Use the Chrome browser
Click the three dots in the upper right corner
Select Settings

Privacy and Security

Clear browser data for all time

Then sign in to TurboTax on the Chrome browser
You should now be able to enter your data and have it save correctly.

  • Taxes
  • Necessary and reasonable repairs to the property
  • Travel costs incurred while doing business

Hello! I just wanted to add that I have this exact same issue. I've spent 90 minutes on the phone with TurboTax employees, and we've tried clearing the cache and cookies, as well as trying on a different device and a different browser, all to no avail. All they could do was say "Maybe try the downloadable product and see if that works."

I think there is actually a bug in TurboTax online somehow.

The EXACT same thing is happening to me for my rental property and I’ve changed my browser to Chrome as well as cleared the cache and cookies. Not sure what else to do.

Strangely, as I went to “Review” tab, my information magically appeared again for my expenses, so I guess my advice would be to keep at it until the very last step and maybe it will work for you as well!

I am having the same issues with my rental property expenses. I can enter my insurance, repairs, but when I enter more than one line in misc expenses, it zeros out those fields and shows not started. but when I click into them to edit my expenses I typed show up but don't pull forward into the calculations. Been on the phone with TT 6 times over the last week trying to fix this.

I have tried different browsers, clearing my cache, different devices (iOS and PC), deleting the individual expense lines out and re-entering, and deleting the entire Schedule E section out and re-entering. What other solutions do you propose trying? This sounds like many are experiencing an issue with this portion of your software.

I still don't have a solution for this. I've also reached out to Turbo Tax on Twitter to see if there's a way to get help that way.

Did anyone find a solution here?  Guess I'm a bit behind you all but finding the same issue.  Customer service has been no help.

I eventually used the downloadable product on Mac to finish my taxes instead of the online product. The interface isn't as pretty, but it did not seem to have the same issues.  (You have to pay up front to download it, unlike the online version of Turbotax, where you pay when you file.)

Anyone find a fix yet?  I decided to wait a week to see if the bug got fixed but seems it has not been.  Still can't get rental expenses to show up.

Had to use the downloadable TurboTax version.  Had to start all over entering info.

Thanks for these details.  This problem is exactly what I'm experiencing, too.

Can you be specific about the "REVIEW" button? In which section?  Just for Rental Property?  Or, the whole return?

Thanks,

paul

I've been having the exact same issue for the past two weeks. I've spoken to several turbo tax representatives, one who suggested to clear the cache and cookies, which did not help the situation and after realizing that he hung up on me. The second call I made, the rep was not able to help me and transferred me to an automated message that said I needed to pay $120 for an expert to solve my problem.

This is not a ME problem, this is a problem with the TURBO TAX WEBSITE. I have used and payed for turbo tax for years and now that their website is not working, it seems that they are totally unable to help me in my time of need. I think I will be taking my business to another service or just go back to mailing my return in. It's just ridiculous that several customers are having the same issue and nothing is being done to resolve this.

yes, I've used TT for several years without a problem, but this year was all around terrible!  I finally "resolved" the expenses issue by Customer Service giving me the download version.  But this had plenty of its own issues, including very sparse guidance, and the inability to prorate mortgage interest and property taxes on a rental converted back to personal.  I ended up basically doing everything manually, so may as well have just filled out the forms myself!

I really don't understand why TT couldn't fix this problem, given that it was reported at least as early as February.

This is still continuing.  I've cleared cache and cookies a million times.  Does TT know and when will it be fixed/

There is no known issue with TurboTax not saving the Rental Expenses you enter.

Be sure you have set up your rental property in the Property Profile section, and in the Depreciation sections under the Rental Property topic.

You may want to go through these screens again in regards to Ownership%, Active Participation, etc.

Hi - I posted about this last year as well and spent many hours on the phone with TurboTax support. Despite what the post above says, this is a persistent bug with TurboTax Online for certain kinds of rental expenses (especially if the expenses exceed the income on the property). TurboTax support does not file bug tickets, so I doubt TurboTax engineers are even aware of this issue, which means that I highly doubt it will be fixed for this year (or, frankly, ever). The only thing I can suggest is to use the downloadable/CD version of the software, which did not have the same bug. That worked for me last year, though I haven't tried it for 2021 taxes yet.

Hey, y'all! Just wanted to let you know that the "Personal Days" used is the section where this issue is occurring, if you change the personal days to 0 the expenses then show! Hope that helps!

First off, please check the personal use days on the profile section. If the number of personal use days is 15 or more, then you will not be able to claim expenses beyond the rental income per IRS rules. Therefore, if you did not use the rental property for personal purposes for 15 or more days, then put 0 in the box for personal use days. I hope this helps!

It worked! I set the personal days used from 5 to 0 and the entries all appeared. I kept the days rented the same: 229. Thanks!

It's 2023 and I'm having the exact issue as all above. BUT I am using the downloadable Deluxe version and STILL have the same problem so IT IS NOT A BROWSER problem, it is a PROGRAM DEFECT issue.

Hey Turbo Tax, been using you for years. How about some HELP!!??
