TurboTax 2019 glitch? Can't uncheck a box on Capital Gain (Loss) Transaction Worksheet

Maybe someone can help me with this? It might be a glitch. I have a transaction that I entered on the Capital Gain (Loss) Transaction Worksheet. In Part 1a - Is this transaction reported to you on Form 1099-B or equivalent statement? I clicked the box NO. Then, both boxes for 1b(1) are both empty. Perfect! But somehow, under question 1b(2): Is Box 3 marked? -- That box is automatically clicked NO as well. It appears as an error when I run Smart Check, but I can't uncheck that box to make it totally blank. I've tried clicking YES on the box for 1a to deactivate it. I've also tried clicking YES on box 1b(2), but nothing seems to work. This is the only thing keeping me from e-filing. I've checked, and my software is up-to-date. Thanks for any help you can provide!

I posted a sample following your criteria and did not get the same result Line 1b(2) remained blank.  I suggest that you delete that record and re-enter it.  I posted as:

  1. I did not get a 1099-B
  2. Delete the old record
  3. Add a new record
  4. I choose Stock as type of investment
  5. Enter your information
  6. I said I bought the stock (one time)
  7. Continue through final screens

The Capital Gains Worksheet has no entry in 1b(2)

I am getting exactly the same issue that the original poster reported.  Item 1b(2) is selected "No" with a red X and is causing the smartcheck to fail.  Item 1b(2) should be blank, but the red X on "no" cannot be removed or changed to "yes".  This only occurs if I have box 1a (is this reported on form 1099-B?) with an answer of "no".

I just noticed that when you tested it you used a stock.  Both of my items that have this problem are not stocks.  One is an option, the other is "Other property (tangible)".

I just did an option sale as a test, and I didn't have a problem either (box 1b2 was not checked for box 3).

OK, please try this.

  • Do a Search for 1099-b and click on the jump-to link.
  • The first screen should say "Here's the investment sales info we have so far".
  • Because some of your sales may be consolidated into one entry, click the Edit button.
  • Then you should see "Here's the info we have on these investment sales".
  • Delete the investment sale in question.
  • Then click Yes (I want to delete it) and then click Add to add a new entry.

See if that clears the problem.

Yes, deleting it and adding it back in worked.  I think the bug has something to do with editing the form, because when I first entered the information in the interview I didn't have an issue, the issue had appeared after I edited some items in the form (but it wasn't the edited items being wrong - when I changed those items back the issue remained).
