My son is a full time student who shares a rental house with other students. So he did not live in our house in 2016, but I paid more than 50% of support. Dependent?

If he is a full time student, does the rental house qualify s a student living away from home for school but his permanent residence is still our family home?

Yes, if he is "away at school" your home is still his residence and the time he is at school he is considered as "living with you" for tax purposes. (It is a temporary absence)
