Is 1099-B holding period determined by how long taxpayer (us) has owned/held stock or is it based upon time financial institute held stock for us?

The holding period to determine long or short term capital gain is based on the time the individual continually owned the investment.

If it was sold and repurchased to make a transition.  It would create a taxable event upon the sale, and the holding period would start over with the re-purchase.
