If I sold stock which was part of a Stock Award from my employer, is that considered 'purchased' investment or was it a 'gifted investment'?

No it's not a gift.  "Stock Award" is a generic term.  Could you be more specific?  Some possibilities are

 

Incentive Stock Option (ISO)

Nonqualified Stock Option (NSO)

Restricted Stock Units (RSU)

...

 

Once that detail is nailed down, I can better advise you on when and how the stock is taxed.
