Here are the steps:

  • Sign in to your TurboTax online account and select- Pick up where you left off
  • Under tab Personal Information, on the Personal Info Summary screen, make sure you have entered your mailing address in MI as a MI resident, then scroll down to the last section Other state income, choose -Edit.
  • On the next screen, choose Yes to the question ‘ Did either of you make money in any other states?’ and select Georgia.

Enter your rental information under:  Federal Taxes / Income & Expenses / Rental Properties and Royalties

By doing the above three steps allows the program recognize you as a MI resident and GA nonresident with rental income.  When you choose the tab State Taxes, the program will display/prepare both Georgia and Michigan states for you to proceed to complete your state taxes.  Please follow:

 a.  Choose ‘Start’ under Georgia and follow the step-by-step interview questions to complete the process.  Please note that in the TurboTax program, in order to allow the program to allocate the taxes correctly between the two states, always choose and complete the process of your nonresident state (GA) prior to your resident state (MI).

 b.  After finishing your GA taxes, the program will return you back to the screen ‘Status of your state returns’, where you can next choose ‘  Start ‘ on your Michigan taxes  Once you complete going through both state sections, TurboTax program will guide you through calculations and allocations of your taxes correctly and transfer the information onto your two state tax returns respectively.

Enter the rental in the rental section of the Business tab.  And the rent in MI will be handled in the state interview if they have a renter's credit.
