If I know the dollar figure for depreciation on my rental property, is there a way to by-pass questions before that, such as the in-service date?

I've had a tax preparer for years and I don't remember the in service date anymore or the cost basis, but I do have the exact figure to plug in for depreciation.

No, all of the information such as the cost basis and date placed in service is required to calculate the current year depreciation amount.

All of this information should be shown on your depreciation schedule for your prior year tax return.  It will not be on an IRS tax form, but a supplemental page that looks like a spreadsheet.  If it is not included with your return, ask for a copy from your previous tax preparer.
