If I have a room specifically used for consulting work at home, can I count it as a home office and claim part of the house rent as an expense?

I have been renting a townhouse with my family. My wife works as a consultant and uses a specific room at home for her work. We are filing our taxes jointly. Can we claim part of the house rent as an expense? Is there any limitation?

Yes, if your wife is self-employed (reports income and expenses on Schedule C) and the room is used exclusively for her business.  There are limits and specific rules.  For more information on taking a home office deduction, see the following TurbTax Help Article:  The Home Office Deduction  and this IRS Tax Tip:  How small business owners can deduct their home office from their taxes
