I got deed-in-lieu on a house. It was a rental from 2012-2016, however I was not renting it in 2017. For 1099-A purposes, does it count as personal or still a rental.

I did not get a 1099-C, only a 1099- A.

A rental.  This would have been a requirement for the deed-in-lieu arrangement to be made, as described at the following website:  https://pocketsense.com/requirements-deed-lieu-foreclosure-rental-property-12065160.html.  (Although the website states that you should also have received a 1099-C, this document is not always provided in this type of exchange, and you can get the information you need off of the 1099-A).

As the website suggests, this particular situation is quite complicated, but you do not need to go to a CPA.  Instead, invest a little more and puchase TurboTax Live.  You can then receive the direct assistance of an Enrolled Agent or CPA who will also double-check your return to make sure it is right.  For more information on this product, please see this FAQ:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/6071042
