I acquired stocks in a spin-off of a company I was invested in. When filling in for my 1099-B, did I purchase these shares or no?

If I had bought the original investment of stock that spun-off the second stock, I would report I purchased it.

If I had inherited the original investment or had received it as a gift, I would choose those options.
