How do I report my mineral rights sale? And do I need to report it in the state the land was in as well?

In TurboTax Online , to report mineral rights sale, follow these directions.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen, click Wages & Income.
  • Scroll down to Other Business Situations and click on the dropdown menu.
  • Click Start/Revisit to the right of Sale of Business Property.
  • Select Sales of business or rental property that you haven't already reported.  (This includes certain farmland, mineral or conservation property.)

The sale will be reported on IRS form 4797 and IRS Schedule D.

If you are a resident of state A and the mineral rights reside in state B, the income will be sourced to state B.

You will be filing a nonresident state B income tax return and a resident state A resident income tax return.

State A will likely give you a credit for taxes paid to state B.
