You will report that in the same section in which you report stock sales with a 1099-B and other investment sales.  To enter:

  • Type "Investment sales" in the search window and click Enter
  • Click on "Jump to Investment sales"
  • What you will see next may vary depending on whether or not you have already entered a Form 1099-B
  • On the page with "Did you sell any investments in 2020?"  Answer Yes
  • Indicate "Other" on the page with "OK, what type of investments did you sell?" and click Continue
  • Enter the name of the person or firm that brokered this sale
  • On the page with "Now we’ll walk you through entering your sale details" for "What type of investment you sold" (Indicate Stock (non-employee)")"
  • Indicate "How did you receive this investment?
  • For Description, I would put "Stock Sales - no 1099-B"
  • Enter the details of the sale, and Continue and repeat for Short-Term sales

Would this hold true if my wife sold some stock and the company in France where the stock was held but didn't have a 1099b biut has a tax document very similar to a 1099B and if so, how do I report that?

Yes!

To navigate the entry:

  1. In the program, under Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds and Other, select Start/ Review/Edit/Revisit.
  2. Did you sell... select YES
  3. Did you receive a 1099-B.. select NO
  4. Tell us about the sale... enter stock and shares
  5. Now we'll walk you through entering your sale details.
  6. Date sold
  7. Date purchased
  8. Proceeds - this should match your form similar to 1099B
  9. Cost or other basis
