Foreign tax attributed to wrong account

Filing a joint return, we have 3 accounts at the same financial institution, all downloaded by TT.  TT doesn't show the account numbers, so I have to figure out which one is which based on the reported dividends and income.  I try to do that at the start but may have waited until a bit later.

In any case, doing foreign tax credits, TT asks to list countries, so I list all (5) of them.  Then going through them country by country, it shows which accounts it thinks had the tax paid, and *only* those accounts.  Unfortunately, it got that wrong.  It claims taxes paid can only be from two accounts, and it is from one which is not showing.

I have confirmed that the labels on the accounts are correct; somehow TT thinks the foreign tax came from the wrong account.

Where / how can I fix / view this screw-up?

I'm not fully understanding your question, but you can go to each 1099-DIV and adjust the box 7 amount for each one and/or find where it is wrong.

If the foreign tax was paid on mutual fund investments you can enter "RIC" (regulated investment company) on the 1099-DIV box 8 and you don't need to break it down by country. If it is from individual stocks, then I think you do need to break it out.

Thanks, but the issue is not a mutual fund RIC.  It's multiple 1099-Divs.  One 1099-Div has multiple countries tax paid, and initially I checked "various".  In review, it wants them broken out.  When I attempt to break them out, the only choice for an investment company for one of the countries is not the correct one.

Example:  I have 3 1099-divs from ML and 1 from DD:

  1099-Div(ML-A)   reports Canada

  1099-Div(ML-B)   reports Japan

   1099-Div(ML-C)  reports Japan, France, Turkey

   1099-Div(DD)     reports RIC

1099-Div(C) entered as "various"; when I go to fix I have to list all countries, so I list (RIC, Canada, France, Japan, Turkey)

When I go to assign France, it lists *only* 1099-Div(ML-B) as an option; 1099-Div(ML-C) is not available.

Hmm... are you using desktop TT? If so, I find it often helps to to forms mode and go directly to the 1116 or 1116-worksheet(s) in question to see what's going on.
