For the virtual currency question on 1040: I bought and sold stock in the company GBTC, can I answer 'no' since I have never directly purchased or sold any cryptocurrency?

For the "financial interest in any virtual currency" question on form 1040: in 2020 I bought and sold stock in the company Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ticker:GBTC ,which is a publicly traded company that buys and stores cryptocurrencies. Those transactions are stated on my 8949, and I paid capital gains tax on them.

So can I answer 'no' since GBTC is a stock and not a cryptocurrency?

That is correct, you owned a stock, not a cryptocurrency.  Therefore, you can answer 'no' to the cryptocurrency question.
