Does patio space count when allocating square footage between rental unit and owner-occupied unit of a duplex?

Does patio space count when allocating square footage between rental unit and owner-occupied unit of a duplex? The rental unit is smaller than the owner-occupied unit but if the patio, which is only accessible to the tenants, is counted, then the square footage of the two units become equal and expenses can be divided half-half. Thank you,

Only count the patio space if it can be considered "actual living space".  If not, use only the interior square footage to make the allocation between the rental and personal expenses.

Thank you, TurboTaxJulieR. The basement is used by the tenant and myself for storage. Would the sq. footage of the basement count half-half for rental usage and personal usage in calculating the % allocation? Or would you exclude it as not being "actual living space"?
