Do I get more from my taxes if I file as independent, I provide for all my expenses and pay 1/4 of rent but I'm registered as dependent on my financial aid application ?

Would I get more from my taxes if I file as independent since I provide for all of my expenses, feeding, transportation and also pay about 1/4 of rent and some utility bills but I'm registered as dependent on my financial aid application. Please do I file as independent to help recover more and also do I get less money on financial aid if I decide to file as independent next time I file for financial aid?

Yes, your Tax Refund can increase of you are able to claim your own exemption. By doing so you are allowed an automatic $4,050.00 downward adjustment to your Taxable Income.

I must advise you that the rules for Financial Aid differ from State to State. I cannot provide advice on how options you elect when filing a Tax Return will affect your Financial Aid status.
