Can I deduct anything for losses due to a fire in the house I was renting even if my renter's insurance had lapsed?

I did not own the residence but had leased it for several years.

So sorry---that is dreadful, but no, casualty losses are not deductible unless you were in a federally declared disaster area--like a wildfire area.

No.  Personal losses are not deductible unless from a federally declared disaster.
