1099-B: I accidentally selected "RS" instead of "RSU" under the type of investment I sold and now I can't change it. How can I change it?

On the 1099-B, under the "What type of investment did you sell?" question, I selected "Restricted stock awards (RS)" instead of "Restricted stock units" and hit Continue. When I tried going back to that screen, I no longer have the option to change the type of investment I sold (a.k.a. the drop down menu is no longer a drop down menu).

How can I change they type of investment?

If you have already entered a transaction, but you need to change the type of investment that was sold, then you should delete the original transaction and start again. When you choose the type of investment that was sold, the questions that will be asked are tailored to that type of investment.

Please see the directions below on how to delete your earlier entry by using these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-B” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here, including the dash) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-B
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-B” link

This will bring you to the summary screen showing investment sales already entered.  Choose Delete or click the trash can icon to remove your prior information.
