Education

It had to be a requirement for your class in order to deduct it on your return. And you have to continue through the Education Expenses section to input it. Check your syllabus or ask your teacher if buying a computer is a requirement for their class if you're not sure.

Example: Peter is enrolled in an online program. If he's required to have a computer to access classes and course materials, then the cost is deductible. However, if Peter is using the computer simply out of convenience, then it most likely doesn't qualify as a deduction.

You can use these steps to get to that section:

  • Log into account and click Take me to my return
  • Type education expenses in Search box in top right corner and hit enter
  • Click on jump to education expenses
  • Go through and answer all questions and after 1098-T section you'll see Now Let's Gather xxx's Additional Education Expenses
  • There you will enter all qualified education expenses

Can I deduct a computer or laptop that I bought for school?
