Not sure why you are mentioning a W-2. Are you a W-2 employee or are you self-employed? Your question was posted from online Self-Employed. If you are a W-2 employee then you cannot deduct mileage or any other job-related expenses on a federal return, per the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.
If you are self-employed, then you cannot enter anything for commuting to or from work, but if you are driving to meet clients, etc. during your work day, you enter those expenses on your Schedule C.
