State tax filing

If the status of your returns are "ready to mail," this means you would need to print the forms and mail them in yourself. However, depending on your tax situation, you may be able to switch from filing by mail to e-filing. To check, please see How to change to e-file your return in TurboTax Online versions.

Or, if you e-filed we'll send you an email when your return goes from pending status to Accepted or Rejected.

You can also find out if the government received your return by checking your e-file status online here using your social security number and zip code.

After you've filed, you may go to the IRS site Where's My Refund to check the status of your refund. Or, if you're using a mobile device, you can download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status.

To track your state refund, you may reference this TurboTax FAQ.

Or, when you sign in to TurboTax, do you see the orange Take me to my return button? If so, most likely you have not filed yet. After your return has been filed, when you login, your e-file status should be the first thing you see.

State tax filing

I'm trying to receive my first and second stimulus

State tax filing

@Michaelpike You are too late to start a 2020 return using online TurboTax if you did not already start by the end of the day on October 15.   If you have a return that is already started you can use the recovery rebate credit to get the 1st and/or 2nd stimulus payments.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the FEDERAL REVIEW section. ( you should see "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount”)  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

Make sure that you enter ALL of the stimulus money received for the 1st and 2nd stimulus for yourself, your spouse and your children.

If you need to start a new 2020 return:

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2018, 2019 or 2020 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.
