After you file
If you haven't actually filed the current tax year (2023) at all, you can open the return interview back up, make
any changes if needed, and when ready, file the return. If when you log in, does TurboTax think you were finished, so your return interview is closed? If so, the steps below tell you how to open it back up to edit your return.
- Log into your account, and at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2023, look for a link "Add a State."
- Click on "Add a State." (That doesn't really add one; that's just to open the return.)
- Once the return is open, if needed you can make any changes in your return you need to, since it has not been filed.
- When finished making your changes, go through the REVIEW section to be sure everything is in order.
- Then go to the FILE section, choose your filing method, and continue answering the screens there.
- If efiling (recommended), be sure to go all the way to the final screen and click a big orange button "Transmit Returns Now."
If you have filed your current year federal tax return and it has been accepted by the IRS ... to access the filed return PDFs :
When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.
This will take you back to the 2023 online tax return.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return. Choose the option you wish to save ... I highly recommend you save the return with and without the worksheets.

IF YOU NEED TO AMEND THE 2023 RETURN ... first save a PDF of the return then follow the instructions here:
If you e-filed the 2023 tax return it will be Pending until the IRS starts accepting tax returns later in January. Until then you cannot change anything on the return that was filed, nor can you amend the 2023 return since it has not been accepted by the IRS.
You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return.
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
