After you file
Sadly you have a very common problem. Teenagers and students do this a lot---they do not understand the significance of saying that they cannot be claimed as dependents and they mess things up for their parents. And---it is true---the only way you can file now is by mail. You will not be able to e-file this year no matter how long you wait. So, go ahead and mail your own return. You do not mail 100+ pages. When you choose to print to file by mail, it will print just the pages needed to send in to the IRS and state, not all of those worksheets.
Your son will have to amend his return, but do not wait for that. His amended return may take months to be processed, and the SSN confusion will not catch up in the system.
No, you do not have to include a special note. They see this all the time.....
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
