If the 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) you entered for yourself (or for your spouse if you filed jointly) doesn't match what the IRS has in their database, records, the IRS will reject your return. Check the information listed below to fix your rejected return:

  • If you don't have a copy of last year's return, you can get your AGI from a free IRS transcript. Online transcripts are available instantly and mailed ones take 5–10 days. On your transcript, look for the line Adjusted Gross Income.
  • Don't "calculate" your AGI from your W-2s or 1099s.
  • If you amended last year, don’t use the AGI from that amended return. Always get it from the first return you filed, even if that AGI was technically incorrect (For example, if you forgot a W-2).
  • If you printed and mailed your return and it was not processed by December 10, 2021, then enter “0” for your 2020 AGI.
  • If you filed a return last year, but somebody claimed you as a dependent, enter the AGI showing on your return for last year (not theirs).
  • If you filed jointly last year but separately this year, enter the AGI from last year’s return.
  • If you're filing jointly this year but selected married filing separately last year, enter each spouse's individual AGIs from last year.
