Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Hi @john clay !

If the student is your child and under the age of 19, or a Full Time student and under the age of 24, at the end of the year, you can claim them as a dependent.  They would file their own tax return for their earned W-2 income and select that they are the dependent of another in the personal information section in TurboTax.

When you enter the information from their form 1098-T, which they should receive from their educational institution, you will be prompted with a bank of questions that will address all of the situations that you describe.   You will find this in the Deductions & Credits section of your TurboTax.

Here is a step by step guide:

The 529 plan should issue a 1099-Q which is also entered in the Deductions & Credits section in your TurboTax:

The questions will guide you through entering all of the information regarding withdrawals, scholarships, etc.

Hope this helps!

Cindy
