Get your taxes done using TurboTax

If your son had no income for 2022 then he has nothing to enter on a 2022 tax return and does not need to file.  If you supported him then he may be a qualifying relative on your tax return and you would get a $500 credit for other dependents for claiming him.

If you paid medical bills for him, and if you itemize deductions then you can also enter the medical expenses you  paid in 2022.  That is a very tough deduction to get, however.

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

MEDICAL EXPENSES

The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.)  expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2022—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding.  Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.

To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses
