Get your taxes done using TurboTax
If you are asking how long it will take to get your refund if you mailed your tax return then it is taking the IRS six to nine months to process mailed returns and send out refunds. Your state refund might arrive sooner if you mailed a state return as well. But no one can tell you exactly how long it will take---we can only give our best guesses.
Make sure you know the exact amount of the refund on line 35a of your Form 1040. You will need that in order to track your refund on the IRS site. AFTER a human opens your envelope (which could take months) they will enter your information into the system and you can then use the IRS site to see when your refund will be issued.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
