How do I file an extension for my business taxes?

Follow these steps to file an extension for your business tax return in TurboTax Business:
TurboTax Online
- Open your return.
- Select Extensions.
- Select Federal extensions and Continue.
- Follow the instructions to prepare your 7004 form.
- On the screen, Review your filing options, choose to e-file or file by mail.
- If e-filing, on the screen Looks good! Please confirm before we continue, select Send extension.
- If filing by mail, on the screen Nice work! You'll drop these in the mailbox, you'll be able to download your return. Mailing instructions will also be provided with your printed extension.
TurboTax Desktop
- Open your return, select Search, and enter extend.
- Under File for an extension, select Click here to start
- Select Extension of time to file (Form 7004) and select Continue.
- Follow the instructions to prepare your 7004 form. This form cannot be e-filed. We’ll provide you with the payment instructions with your printed extension. If you're located in New York and must e-file your corporate return, click here to e-file your state form.Â
Your extension deadline depends on your business type:
- Partnership income (Form 1065) and S corporation income (Form 1120S) taxes are due September 15, 2026.
- Estates and trusts income (Form 1041) taxes are due September 30, 2026.
- Corporation income (Form 1120) taxes are due October 15, 2026.
- Unless the fiscal year ends June 30, in which case your return is due September 15, 2026, and the extension gives you until April 15, 2027 to file.
