For most tax payers there is no second extension available from the IRS. If you do not file your returns by October 15 2025, you will be assessed penalties for failure to file on time and if taxes are owed, you will have additional penalties for failure to pay on time as well. You will also owe interest on the taxes owed. I recommend you file your returns by October 15 2025.
There are certain circumstances when you can file after the October 15th deadline:
1) Military serving in a combat zone: The filing deadline is typically extended for 180 days after leaving the combat zone.
2) Federally declared disaster areas: Here the IRS give the automatic extension to file at a later date if the place you live in falls under FEMA
3) US citizen living abroad: then you can request an extension till December 15 by filing Form 2350.
4) Undue hardship: For this you have to write to the IRS and they may grant you an extension.
