I attended school in 2017 and paid almost 16k for tuition. I am working towards masters degree and at least half-time student.
10k reimbursed by my employer ($5250 of it is tax free). I also received 1098-T form and put it's information in turbotax.
Turbotax says I am not eligible to to claim an education credit and non of the possible reasons apply to me.
- I, myself, am a tax payer and a student and no one claims me on their return
- I didn't receive any scholarship. The reimbursement is in my W-2 form that I received from my employer
- I have taxable income in my return
- I don't have any education saving account or anything related to it.
You may want to go back through your entries in the education section of TurboTax to make sure there are no errors in entry that would stop you from getting the credit. Sometimes if your modified adjusted gross income is over a certain limit, this would also prohibit you from getting the credit. The TurboTax FAQ link below explains more about the income limits for education credits.
In order to review your information for accuracy in the education section of TurboTax (while your return is still in progress)

Thanks for your prompt answer. My student information worksheet says Tuition and Fees deduction not available for 2017, Form 8917. I am not able to find this form in Turbotax, could you help me locate this form? thanks
I have verified my MAGI is above 132k and less than 160k. I am filing married jointly. So I should be able to get the deduction but Turbotax doesn't let me do that.
I updated TurboTax, the tax bill is signed by president and now I can claim tuition deduction, yeyyyy
