I received a student loan interest statement showing an amount less than $600. Where do I enter this number?

You enter the student loan interest in the same place you would if it was more than $600. Here's how to enter student loan interest in TurboTax.

  • Click the Federal Taxes tab.
  • Click Deductions & Credits.
  • Click "I'll choose what I work on" or "Jump to a full list."
  • On the screen "Your 2017 Deductions & Credits," scroll down to the "Education" section.
  • Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for "Student Loan Interest Paid (Form 1098-E)."

All you have to enter is the name of the lender and the amount of interest. Enter the interest in the box that says "Box 1 - interest paid" even if you did not get a Form 1098-E.
