What if I don’t know how much I paid in books and supplies for school

If you don't know how much you paid for books and supplies for school or you don't have receipts that would help you figure it out, then do not enter an amount in your tax return for those expenses.

You will need receipts or other substantiation to claim the expense in case the IRS asks for proof.
