Tuition and fees not entered on 1098-T- not clear on what the fee portion includes that I can report. Where can I find what is included in the fees I can claim?

Unclear about what fees exactly that I can claim that are not included w/ the 1098-t?  Where can I find that information?

The precise composition of the fees does not matter. Most colleges and universities have several required fees that are assessed agains all students: facilities fees, student government fees, student activity fees, etc. All fees that are required for enrollment are includable in the scope of "qualified tuition and fees." If it was billed and paid and it was not optional, it can be included.

Ok thank you! I'm still not quite clear regarding the fees over & above the tuition & I think I am missing this totally (sorry!).  For instance, my son's tuition is $2309 (#2 on 1098-t).  For the tuition/fees NOT entered on 1098-t - is that referring to additional expenses like books, etc.? Thank you so much sorry to be an idiot but this scares me 🙂

Is this asking how much she was charged for each class?

It is asking for the amount of tuition and fees that are not included on you 1098-T.

The best way to check this is get a printout of the student account from the school.

This is usually available online through a student portal. Per @MichaelMc above 'All fees that are required for enrollment are includable in the scope of "qualified tuition and fees."

Our son has some such fees that are not included on his 1098T but were required for enrollment or attendance (e.g., a health service fee assessed of all students). We want to enter these to offset our withdrawal from a 529 account, but I do not see where these additional fees would be entered.

Thanks!

You enter them in the section where you enter the form 1098-T, in the "Deductions and Credits" section, then "Expenses and Scholarships form 1098-T" as follows:

@ThomasM125 I have this same question and it’s not really which section you enter it but specifically which field. I didn’t want to edit the values in the 1098-T fields.  None of the other fields in this section seem to be an appropriate spot based on the fact it’s additional fees and not room and board, books and materials, or technology.

These fees will be all part of Tuition and enrollment fees. So wherever you entered the amount for this figure, you may go ahead and add these enrollment and assessment fees as well.
