Son took & failed/withdrew from all 3 Fall classes. Owes full bill. 1098T does not show half-time but was. IRS says can still get credit if withdraw & pays. Now what?

3 classes is considered at least"half-time" but my son failed  one & withdrew from 2 classes after add/drop.  He owes full amount for the 3 classes. American Opportunity credit is available for withdrawn and failed claess if student still paying expenses.

However, the school did not check box 8 so Turbo Tax will not allow credit. School told my son form was correct but it is not.   He was enrolled at least half-time and owes the money.  Should I just check box 8 since that is the correct treatment of his enrollment?

After entering the 1098-T, the interview will give you a 2nd chance to click half time or more.  Check that box and you can proceed.

Guess the real question here is: does student qualify for credit?

Yes, if you're are only asking about the half time issue.   You are correct; if he was half time while he was a student, no matter how briefly, he qualifies

Your original question indicated that you just needed to know how to get Turbotax (TT) to allow you to proceed. You are not locked out by the school's failure to check the half time box on the 1098-T.
