I am a medical student and during 4th year I had to travel from city to city ( out of state too) for rotations at different hospitals. I had car rental, hotel/airbnb, flight expenses and since these rotations are not optional ( required for gradutation) I wonder if ANY of these expenses qualify as education expenses.
My income is received as 1099-NEC & W2 (school library job).
Are you a W-2 employee?
Can I deduct job-related expenses on my tax return?
Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return. Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond. Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.
If you live in a state that lets you deduct job-related expenses, the information will flow from your federal return to the state return, so enter it in Federal>Deductions and Credits>Employment Expenses>Job-Related Expenses
And.....travel is
not
a qualified education expense. You cannot get education credit for education-related travel.
You mention that some of your income is on a 1099NEC. That is self-employment income for which you can prepare a Schedule C for business expenses.
