My son was president of the student body. He got paid $ and got a 1098-MISC. When I enter it in other income, it copies it to business income, which doesn't sound right.

All that was filled in on the 1098-MISC box 7, non-employee compensation. On the following screens I tried "money from scholarship/fellowship", "none of these apply", and "commision not from my employeer".

He has a part time job at a department store, thats his main job.

Last year, while this was income, it wasn't business income. It looks like its trying to make this a business/self-employed situation.

Since the income reported on your son's Form 1099-MISC is not for self-employment income for services he performed, use the following steps to report it as other income and not self-employment income.

·         On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

·         This opens a box where you can type in “1099-MISC” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

·         The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-MISC"

·         Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-MISC” link

·         Enter the information from your 1099-MISC, then click Continue

·         Enter a description for the income, then click Continue

·         Select None of these apply, then click Continue

·         Select No, it did not involve work like my main job, then click Continue

·         Select I got it in 2018, then click Continue

·         Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money, then click Continue

·         This will place the income on line 21 of Schedule 1 under Other Income
