My son had his student loan with Navient -they won't provide 1098-E for student loan interest. Can I file based on his payment statement?

Yes, you can file without the Form 1098-E.  As long as he keeps a record of the payment he has made, he will be fine.

The form may be available at Navient's web site <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://navient.com/in-repayment/taxes-and-interest">https://navient.com/in-repayment/taxes-and-interest</a>

You can enter student loan interest whether or not you received a 1098-E from your lender.

  • Down the left side, click on Federal.
  • At the top, click on Deductions and Credits.
  • Under Your tax breaks, click on Show more to the right of Education.
  • Click on Start to the right of Student Loan Interest Paid.
  • Answer the questions as much as you can.
