Does she qualify as dependent while filing taxes . She is 21 years old and earned less than 5050$ last year through her on campus job.
@krishnapriya183 it is confusing as there are two flavors of dependents : qualifying children (QC) and qualifying relatives (QR).
a QC is under 19 or under 24 and a full time college student. There is no income measurement. The dependent provides LESS THAN 50% of their own support and lives with the taxpayer at least 6 months of the year (living at college is temporarily away from home and considered living at home)
a QR is not a QC and there is an income requirement not to exceed $5050 (2024). A blood relative doesn't have to live with the taxpayer. The taxpayer provides at least 50% of the dependent's financial support.
In all likelihood, your college age student is a QC.
I suggest you review the IRS info about dependents at
https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/dependents
Read about the requirements, or there is a link to ask you questions and give you an answer.
It depends on what "as Intl student" means.
There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and Other ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test.
A child of a taxpayer can still be a “Qualifying Child” (QC) dependent, regardless of his/her income, if:
A person can still be a Qualifying relative dependent, if not a Qualifying Child, if he meets the 6 tests for claiming a dependent:
In either case:
He must have a US social security number or tax identification number (TIN)
