Is anyone else having problems with the entry of their 1098-t form and education expense credit? I have tried to enter it several times and it never works properly.

Not sure what you mean by "it never works properly."    Please explain.  And if you are a dependent on someone else's return, or if you are filing married filing separately, you cannot get education credits.

When I am on the Your Tax Breaks page it says not started even though I have started and completed it, it does not give me any credit even though this is only my daughters 2nd time to use this deduction on my return, and it does not give me any info in the education summary page.

Click Review to see if the forms for the education credits are even ready yet.

Go through the entire education interview until you reach a scree titled "Your Education Expenses Summary".  Click edit next to the student's name. That should take you to a screen “Here’s your Education Summary”. Click edit next to the section you want to change.

TurboTax is not providing the option of entering higher education expenses for 2019.

1. It asks, "Did you have any higher education expenses in 2019? This section includes Form 1098-E, Form 1098-T, Scholarships and more.

2. When you click Yes it goes to "Tell us about your education plans" i.e. Coverdell Education Savings Account and distribution from a 1099-Q (QTP). I answer "No" to both.

3. Then it asks for Additional Education Expenses. Book, Classroom Supplies and Lab Equipment. Click "Continue"

4. Did you Pay for Books or Materials to attend school? Yes.

5. It shows "Tuition and Enrollment Fees" $0. With fields to enter Books and Materials "required and Books and Materials "not required".

6. Finally, it says, "You can't claim an education tax break". Based on what you've entered so far you are not eligible for an education credit. Here is why you may not qualify.

  • There were no net qualified education expenses.

There is definitely a bug in your software.

I have no issue entering the 1098-T in the correct section ...

can you please re-post with the actual numbers in each block of form 1098-T.   I do not think there is a bug either  as I got it to work just fine.

also, this may help as the 1098-T sometimes gets confusing

  • If a parent claims the child as their dependent,  the parent will claim the 1098-T and education expenses, regardless who paid.
  • If the parent does not claim the child as their dependent, the student will claim the 1098-T and education expenses, regardless who paid.
  • If the scholarships, grants, and other aid (except loans) is more than the tuition, fees, books, and supplies, the student will claim the 1098-T and education expenses, and will claim the excess aid as taxable income.

Not helpful.  I am having the exact same problem the person who asked the question is.  It keeps saying not started whenI have entered or responded to every question as well. Very frustrating.

What does that mean if the form are even ready?  if you are entering the information off the form to do you taxes they are in hand.
