Is 1098T applicable for an international student?

I am on F1 visa status who finished my Masters in March 2016. In the 1098T section, I selected the "None of these apply" option but the system still provides the American Opportunity Tax credit. Is this valid?

No, it does not apply to nonresident students.

If year of 2016 is within the five year periods from the first year you entered the United States, you are considered as a nonresident in 2016 and will not qualify for any educational credit or deduction.

As TurboTax does not support the Form 1040-NR, you are advised to use our partner, Sprintax to complete your filing.

Thanks for your response. I ended up filing my taxes using Turbo Tax before seeing your message. Would that be a problem? (I did get the option of selecting 1040NR form on TurboTax)

It appears that the payment I had made through TurboTax has gone through. Is there a way I can cancel the payment? If not, it seems like SprintTax applies certain tax treaties. What if some tax refunds apply?

There isn't a way to contact them directly since I'm not using the PLUS account. The only option is to ask a question using the form which is what I'm doing here. So how do I request for refund?

To amend from Form 1040 to 1040NR,  here are the steps:

-If you are considered as a nonresident, as TurboTax does not support the NR form, you are recommended to use our  affiliated partner, Sprintax  to complete your 1040-NR filing.

1.  Download the Form 1040-X from IRS website ( see below).  On the front page of Form 1040-X, enter your name,                    current address, and social security number (SSN) or IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)

2.  Do not enter any other information on page 1.

3.  Do not complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.

4.  Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.

5.  Complete a new or corrected form 1040-NR by using Sprintax, see above.

6.  Across the top of the 1040-NR, write “Amended

7.  Attach the new or corrected return (Form 1040, Form 1040NR, etc. to the back of Form 1040X
