If my son lived off campus for 5 months and paid rent with basic utilities to attend his university, can I claim that on my taxes since he is my dependent?

No, you cannot, unfortunately.  Rent and utilities are not qualified education expenses or deductible expenses of any kind for tax purposes.  They are considered personal.
