You can claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit if your parents and you have not used it 4 times already.

The times the credit was used as you being the student counts as times you used it.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit can only be used 4 times.

The Hope Credit is no longer available, but if a taxpayer had claimed that on a student, it would count as one of the four times the AOTC can be used.
