If I received a small scholarship and very small stipend as an international student from my school, how do I claim iit?

I received a scholarship for my first semester of law school, around $12,500 and small stipend, $2000 (for expenses) . How do I claim these or do I need to? I am an international student.

You must account for them but they may not be taxable. United States Income Tax Treaties has many treaties that cover students. If your income is covered by a treaty, see another post of mine here.

They could both be regular income. See Topic no. 421, Scholarships, fellowship grants,

  • If you have a 1098-T, you can add the scholarships in there. See more here.
  • If you do not have a 1098-T,  see this post of mine.
